Tan Removal Before Waxing or After? A Salon Professional’s Guide
Share
When a client books both waxing and tan removal, one question often comes up:
Should you remove the tan before waxing, or wax first?
The order matters. Performing these treatments in the wrong sequence can leave skin feeling more sensitised, affect the finish of the treatment, and compromise the overall client experience.
For most salon routines, the preferred approach is simple:
Wax First. Tan Removal Later.
When both services are being performed during the same salon visit, waxing is generally best completed before a tan-removal treatment, provided the skin is healthy, intact and suitable for both services.
Here's why.
Why Waxing Comes First
1. Waxing Removes Hair and Surface Buildup
Waxing doesn't only remove unwanted hair. Depending on the wax and technique used, it can also lift some surface dead skin cells and buildup.
Starting with a clean, freshly cleansed surface allows the waxing treatment to be performed effectively without another exfoliating treatment immediately beforehand.
2. Avoid Over-Treating the Skin Before Waxing
Tan-removal treatments may involve exfoliating or brightening ingredients. Applying an exfoliating treatment immediately before waxing can leave the skin more sensitive than necessary.
Waxing already places temporary stress on the skin. Combining two potentially sensitising treatments back-to-back in the wrong order may increase the likelihood of redness, discomfort or irritation.
For this reason, avoid aggressive exfoliation or tan-removal treatments immediately before waxing.
3. A Cleaner Treatment Sequence
When the services are performed in the right order, the salon can keep each step focused:
Cleanse → Wax → Soothe → Tan Removal → Hydrate
This makes the overall treatment easier to manage and creates a more comfortable experience for the client.
Why Tan Removal Before Waxing Isn't Ideal
Performing a tan-removal treatment immediately before waxing can create a few unnecessary challenges.
Increased Skin Sensitivity
If the tan-removal treatment involves exfoliation or active ingredients, waxing immediately afterward may increase the likelihood of temporary redness or sensitivity.
Unnecessary Double Treatment
Both treatments can affect the skin's surface. Performing them back-to-back without allowing the skin to settle can be unnecessarily aggressive, particularly for clients with sensitive or reactive skin.
Waxing Should Start on Properly Prepared Skin
For effective waxing, the treatment area should be clean and free from excess oil, sweat, creams and product residue.
That's why a dedicated pre-wax cleanser is an important part of the professional waxing routine.
The Ideal Salon Workflow
When a client is receiving both services during the same appointment, a practical sequence is:
Step 1: Cleanse
Begin by cleansing the treatment area with a professional pre-wax cleanser to remove sweat, oil, dirt and product residue.
Step 2: Wax
Perform the waxing service using the appropriate Liposoluble or Cartridge Wax based on the treatment area, hair type and professional assessment.
Step 3: Soothe
Remove any residual wax and apply an appropriate post-wax product to help calm and condition the skin.
Step 4: Allow the Skin to Settle
Give the skin time to settle before introducing another active treatment. The appropriate interval will depend on the client's skin condition, the areas treated and the tan-removal product being used.
Step 5: Tan Removal
Apply the tan-removal treatment according to the product's professional directions, including the recommended application method and contact time.
Step 6: Hydrate
Finish with a suitable moisturiser or calming product to leave the skin feeling comfortable, soft and conditioned.
The goal isn't simply to complete two treatments. It's to make sure the skin is treated thoughtfully at every stage.
What About Clients with Sensitive Skin?
Not every client should receive waxing and tan removal back-to-back.
Before combining treatments, assess the skin for:
- Active irritation or redness
- Cuts, abrasions or broken skin
- Sunburn
- Recent chemical exfoliation
- Recent intensive skincare treatments
- Known sensitivity to waxing or active ingredients
If the skin appears compromised, postpone one of the treatments rather than forcing both into the same appointment.
A professional's judgement should always come before the treatment schedule.
Preparing Clients for Weddings & Special Events
Wedding and festival season often means clients want several treatments close together.
But when it comes to skin treatments, more isn't always better.
If a client has an important event coming up, avoid scheduling potentially sensitising treatments at the last minute. Allow enough time for any temporary redness or sensitivity to settle and for the skin to return to its normal appearance.
For first-time clients, consider performing treatments well ahead of the event rather than introducing a new treatment immediately before it.
The Professional Difference
A great salon experience isn't only about the products you use.
It's about knowing when to use them, how to combine treatments, and when to tell a client to wait.
The right sequence can help create a smoother treatment experience, better-looking results and, most importantly, greater client confidence.
At Richelon, our professional waxing and skincare range is designed with salon routines in mind — from Liposoluble and Cartridge Waxes to Post-Wax Care and Tan Removal treatments.
